Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger

Twelve-year-old Sophie has never quite fit into her life. She’s skipped multiple grades and doesn’t really connect with the older kids at school, but she’s not comfortable with her family, either. The reason? Sophie’s a Telepath, someone who can read minds. No one knows her secret—at least, that’s what she thinks . . .

But the day Sophie meets Fitz, a mysterious (and adorable) boy, she learns she’s not alone. He’s a Telepath too, and it turns out the reason she has never felt at home is that, well . . . she isn’t. Fitz opens Sophie’s eyes to a shocking truth, and she is forced to leave behind her family for a new life in a place that is vastly different from what she has ever known.

But Sophie still has secrets, and they’re buried deep in her memory for good reason: The answers are dangerous and in high-demand. What is her true identity, and why was she hidden among humans? The truth could mean life or death—and time is running out.

Sophie is tasked with helping to train the magical creature so that the Alicorn can be revealed to the people of the lost cities as a sign of hope, and Sophie wants to believe that the recent drama and anguish is gone for good.

But the secrets buried deep in Sophie’s memories remain, and before long before she’s back in incredible danger, risking everything to find the answers to questions that could save not only her life, but the life of someone close to her . . .

Sophie Foster has always felt out of place. Her remarkable intelligence, which has made her a high school senior at only twelve years old, has also left her disconnected from everything and everyone--even her family. She's also been hiding her ability to read minds, thinking it's because she fell and hit her head when she was five. But when she meets a beautiful and intriguing boy named Fitz on a class field trip, Sophie discovers it's actually because she isn’t human at all! She’s an elf, just like Fitz, and is part of a secret world hidden on our planet called the Lost Cities.  From that moment on, Sophie’s life is forever changed. Leaving behind the human world she’s only ever known, Sophie embarks on an incredible journey to discover where she truly belongs, and uncovers new abilities, new friends, and the powerful and extraordinary individual she was always meant to be.

Dex Dizznee is Sophie’s best friend in the Lost Cities, and immediately takes Sophie “under his wing.” He introduces her to the teachers and students that make up FoxFire Academy and helps her find her way around the humongous campus. He doesn't have a special ability when Sophie first meets him, but she can tell he's incredibly talented. When he isn’t busy playing a practical joke on the school bully Stina, or working at Slurps and Burps, his parents' special apothecary, Dex is right by Sophie’s side, looking out for her, helping with anything she needs, and tutoring her in her most challenging subjects. Best of all, he knows how to make her laugh--though sometimes he wishes he could make her feel something ... more. He's happy to be her friend, but he can't help having a huge crush on her too, and is less-than-thrilled to find himself in a competition with Fitz--and maybe Keefe--to win Sophie’s heart.

Keefe Sencen is Foxfire Academy's resident troublemaker--though he'll of course claim he had nothing to do with "The Great Gulon Incident." Confident and cute, with infamously awesome hair, he's always ready with the perfect joke or prank to make everyone laugh. Naturally that makes him quite popular at school (though not nearly as popular with the teachers). But while he may be a regular in detention--and know all the best places to ditch class--there's so much more to Keefe than his prankster ways. His photographic memory has allowed him to skip an entire grade level, and he's an excellent friend to Fitz and Biana. He also befriends Sophie from the moment he meets her--and not just because he loves teasing her. His ability as an Empath allows him to read her feelings, which helps him understand her in ways no one else can. He's always there when she needs him, whether she realizes she needs his help or not. If only he could understand his own feelings for her as easily...

Fitz Vacker is the confident teal-eyed heartthrob who spent years secretly helping his dad search for Sophie in the human world. And despite coming from a famously important family, he's actually very down-to-earth. Like Sophie, he's a Telepath, though not *quite* as powerful as she is. And even though he's two grade levels ahead of Sophie at Foxfire Academy--the school they both attend--he still sits with her at lunch. He's best friends with Keefe,  but he's also “Mr. Popular,” and quite a few girls at Foxfire are known to have crushes on him. He never knows what do do what that, just like he doesn't always know the right thing to say to Sophie. But he cares about her more than she knows--more than he knows, sometimes. Maybe it's because he saw how hard it was for Sophie to leave her human life behind, or because she's close in age to his younger sister, Biana, but he feels a special connection with Sophie, and does everything he can to keep her happy and safe.

Biana Vacker may seem like the Princess of Foxfire Academy--but don't let the perfect hair and fashionable dresses fool you. Yes, her family is kinda famous, and most people think she's the prettiest girl in school, but beneath all the make-up and perfectly coordinated accessories is an incredibly loyal friend. She's fiercely protective of her brother, Fitz, especially from the silly girls always crushing on him. And once she gets past some misunderstandings with Sophie, they become very close. Biana may not have manifested her special ability when we first meet her, but that never stops her from taking on Fitz and Keefe in a game of base quest, (And no, that's not just because Keefe is so cute--though that definitely *does* help). She's also not afraid to tackle or throw a few punches either--so long as she can still do it in heels. And when it comes to understanding boys, Biana might be the best. Hopefully she can help Sophie sort things out.
